The PMP® Audit Process

In any given PMP® exam application cycle, a small percentage of applicants have the chance of being randomly selected for an audit. While the prospect of being selected may seem stressful, the audit is generally a simple process. The audit is a way for the Project Management Institute (PMI), the organization that delivers the PMP®exam, to guarantee suitable standards for checking applicant documentation. If you have been selected, you will be informed after submitting the application fee.

The PMP Audit Package

The PMP® audit is a confirmation of the prerequisite experience you declared in order to sit for the PMP® exam. Each of the following must be sent to the PMI:

Proof of education – Applicants will need to provide a photocopy of their degree certificate for the highest level of education completed.

Proof of 35 hours of project management education – In order to sit for the PMP®, all applicants must complete 35 hours of formal education in project management. As with the proof of degree, a photocopy of this certificate or equivalent course documentation is required.

Details of your project management experience – This step may take a bit more legwork than the other two, but it remains straightforward. After registering for the PMP®exam, applicants are given access to the myPMI section of the PMI website. In this section, applicants can find the audit package organized by PMI. Print out the PDF documents and mail each of them to your supervisors.

Supervisors will verify and sign off on each form, then return them to the applicant with an additional signature over the seal of the envelope. Once this has been completed, do not open the envelope. Rather, collect them together and include the unopened envelopes in your application package. Make sure to instruct supervisors not to send the envelopes directly to PMI. In order to process the audit correctly, the applicant should send all envelopes to PMI together.

After the three components are completed, mail the entire audit package to the address provided by PMI when they selected you for the audit. Note that it typically takes PMI five-to-seven days to receive the package, review it and process the audit. When PMI concludes the audit, you can schedule your PMP® exam.
