The more you know about transformational leadership, the better prepared you\u2019ll be to lead in today\u2019s dynamic business environment. The first step is to understand what makes this leadership style unique and what transformational leadership characteristics you\u2019ll need to develop to make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What Is Transformational Leadership?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformational leadership focuses on empowering others and inspiring change. To achieve these ends, transformational leaders instill a sense of ownership and participation\u2014in their teams and in themselves\u2014by utilizing the <a href=\"https:\/\/bisk-preprod.go-vip.co\/msu\/resources\/leadership\/4-is-of-transformational-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">four \u201cI\u2019s\u201d of transformational leadership<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Intellectual stimulation<\/strong> encourages innovative thinking by emphasizing new experiences and growth opportunities.<\/li><li><strong>Individual consideration<\/strong> builds positive relationships by mentoring employees and helping each person understand their value and potential.<\/li><li><strong>Inspirational motivation<\/strong> models a vision for the organization, the team and for employees to emulate and make their own.<\/li><li><strong>Idealized influence<\/strong> models expectations and actions for employees, earning their trust and respect.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u200cThese four \u201cI\u2019s\u201d provide the foundational philosophy of transformational leadership, helping to differentiate it from leadership philosophies with a similar style, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bisk-preprod.go-vip.co\/msu\/resources\/leadership\/qualities-of-a-visionary-leader\/\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/bisk-preprod.go-vip.co\/msu\/resources\/leadership\/qualities-of-a-visionary-leader\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visionary leadership<\/a>, and even complement those styles with opposite approaches, such as <a href=\"https:\/\/bisk-preprod.go-vip.co\/msu\/resources\/leadership\/transactional-vs-transformational-leadership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">transactional leadership<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7 Characteristics of a Transformational Leader<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To embody the four \u201cI\u2019s\u201d of transformational leadership, you\u2019ll want to develop certain transformational leadership characteristics or traits. These are not innate characteristics or personality traits that you are either born with or you are not. Instead, they can be thought of as \u201cuseful behaviors\u201d that can be developed, modified and utilized based on the situation and team leadership needs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Jeffrey Pfeffer, Professor of Organizational Behavior at Stanford, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/featured-insights\/leadership\/getting-beyond-the-bs-of-leadership-literature\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">writes in McKinsey Quarterly<\/a>, \u201cpeople are not only shaped by their enduring traits but also profoundly influenced by cues and constraints that vary by situation\u2026Characterizing leaders\u2019 behavior as somehow dependent on inherent traits provides an easy excuse for avoiding the sort of behavior and strategies that may be required to get things done.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In developing these seven characteristics of a transformational leader, or of any leadership style, it\u2019s important to recognize that \u201cleadership, the capacity to get things done, is a skill that can be improved like any other.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Openness to New Thinking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformational leaders are constantly open to innovation wherever it may arise. They constantly look for opportunities to do things differently and are always open to new ideas, no matter where those ideas may present themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henry Ford famously developed the concept of his car assembly line while visiting a meat-packing plant. Ford&#8217;s open mindset allowed him to see the stepwise disassembly of animal carcasses and envisioned the process in reverse, changing construction procedures so each worker was responsible for assembling a single part. Within six years, his company\u2019s <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/theymadeamerica\/whomade\/ford_hi.html\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/theymadeamerica\/whomade\/ford_hi.html\">output increased from 32,000 to 735,000 cars per year<\/a>.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Talent for Broadening Minds<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformational leadership often involves shifting people\u2019s views on how things should work. To do so, it\u2019s necessary to understand the rationale behind people\u2019s current mindsets and how to shift their thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The transformational leader needs to understand where people are coming from and convince them to step outside of their comfort zone. This requires two separate skills: empathy and the ability to inspire confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. Commitment to Active Listening<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not enough for transformational leaders to request \u2014 or even inspire \u2014 ideas. They also need to make their colleagues and team members feel bold enough to share those ideas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transformational leaders hear ideas with an open mind and respond without judgment or finality. They commit to employing active listening techniques so that their team members feel seen, understood and respected. With these methods in place, they inspire others to share their thoughts without self-censoring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Tolerance for Intelligent Risks<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>No transformation happens without some risk of failure. A transformational leader needs to be willing to consider those risks and what they might mean for the future of the organization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the benefits of an idea outweigh the risks, the leader must be willing to pursue it further if it seems feasible. The leader also has to recognize when the risk is too great, and a different approach is needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Willingness to Accept Responsibility<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Any innovator who ventures into uncharted territory must be willing to own the results of doing so, good or bad. No leader inspires confidence if they demand that others take the fall when an idea fails. Transformational leaders must assume responsibility for each of their decisions, including green lighting the ideas of others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Trust in Team Members<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>People need autonomy to develop and shape new ideas. The transformational leader understands this and trusts team members to define their own steps to success.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take Reed Hastings, CEO of Netflix. Hastings grants unlimited vacation time to Netflix employees as long as performance remains high and the team\u2019s well-being doesn\u2019t suffer. Netflix\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/justin-bariso\/netflixs-unlimited-vacation-policy-took-years-to-get-right-its-a-lesson-in-emotional-intelligence.html\" data-type=\"URL\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.inc.com\/justin-bariso\/netflixs-unlimited-vacation-policy-took-years-to-get-right-its-a-lesson-in-emotional-intelligence.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">unlimited vacation policy<\/a> began in 2003. Just four years later, the company had developed and launched its industry-disrupting streaming service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Ability to Inspire Participation<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For innovation to happen, it needs to be part of a team\u2019s culture. The transformational leader needs to expect creativity from everyone \u2014 not just one or two \u201cidea people.\u201d The leader\u2019s job is to model universal creativity and innovation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There needs to be an established expectation that everyone \u2014 including the leader \u2014 will think outside the box, recognizing thoughts and ideas, even when they don\u2019t generate paradigm-shifting results.
