What is Blended Learning?
Last Updated May 28, 2019
As access to technology continues transforming the delivery of education, blended learning has proven to be a successful model. But what is blended learning? Blended learning, also known as hybrid learning, combines benefits of in-class instruction with online instruction.
In blended programs, students take the majority of classes online but attend the university for brief periods to interact with instructors and fellow students. The programs offer the flexibility of online courses along with opportunities for students to engage in networking and personal interactions during on-site sessions.
Who Can Benefit from Blended Learning?
Blended learning harnesses constantly improving technology to create a personalized learning experience for each student. It is especially effective for working professionals who are pursuing advanced education to enhance their career opportunities while balancing classes with work. The blend of online courses with face-to-face, on-campus sessions is designed to yield the ideal learning experience along with the opportunity to build lasting relationships with faculty and classmates.
Why Blended Learning?
Blended learning offers a number of unique advantages:
- Online instruction provides the convenience of attending classes as your schedule allows.
- Lifelong connections can be fostered with professors and other students.
- On-campus sessions are often conducted during weekends for the least disruption of work obligations.
- Hands-on instruction provides for a more robust and impactful learning experience.
- The combination of online and in-person instruction meets the needs of today’s busy professionals.
Blended learning is more active and personal than traditional, lecture-based learning. It allows each student to optimize his or her learning.
How Does Blended Learning Work at MSU?
MSU’s newly redesigned Master of Science in Supply Chain Management program from the AACSB-accredited Eli Broad College of Business gives students the unique opportunity to learn the latest strategies and practices from industry-leading faculty in a format that’s more flexible than ever.
Online courses can be accessed 24/7 through an enhanced platform, while on-campus instruction takes place during three-day weekend sessions on the MSU campus and at one of Michigan State’s state-of-the-art facilities. Students attend four three-day, weekend sessions on-site to participate in simulation assignments, breakout sessions and interactive case study exercises.
The Blended Learning Advantage
Through MSU’s Master’s in Supply Chain Management program, students can enjoy all the advantages of blended learning, including face-to-face interaction with professors and fellow students, reduced time in the classroom, and a personalized learning experience.
This powerful combination contributes to the high caliber of professionals who emerge from the Supply Chain Management program. Michigan State’s Department of Supply Chain Management has been ranked the best in the nation for five consecutive years by U.S. News & World Report, while a recent survey by SCM World found that supply chain executives worldwide consider MSU to be the top-ranked university for developing supply chain talent.
